FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Wildlife Tours & Ocean Safaris
What can I expect from a wildlife tour?
Every day on the ocean is different. We explore the areas where marine life is most active, adapting our plans to the conditions and sightings along the way. Depending on the location and season, we may encounter sea lions, dolphins, rays, sharks, whales and other marine wildlife.
There is no fixed script out there, and that's part of what makes it special.
Are wildlife sightings guaranteed?
No. We work with experienced local captains and use our knowledge of the area to maximise our chances, but wildlife is wild and sightings can never be guaranteed. Every trip is shaped by the animals, the ocean and the conditions of the day.
Can I swim with whales in Mexico?
No. Swimming with whales is not permitted on our La Ventana wildlife tours. We observe marine wildlife from the boat and follow the applicable local regulations and responsible wildlife-viewing practices.
Do I need underwater photography experience?
Not at all. Our wildlife tours are open to anyone who loves the ocean and wants to experience marine life in its natural environment. You don't need to be a photographer to join us.
Do I need to bring a camera?
No. You are welcome to bring your camera if you have one, but it's not a requirement. You can simply enjoy the experience, observe the animals and take everything in.
Are your wildlife tours suitable for beginners?
Yes, provided you meet the requirements for the specific activity. You don't need previous wildlife photography experience, but you should read the trip information carefully to understand what's involved.
What happens if the weather or ocean conditions are bad?
Safety always comes first. We assess conditions and adapt our plans when necessary. This may mean changing our route, adjusting the schedule or cancelling an activity if conditions are unsuitable.
What should I bring on a wildlife tour?
We recommend bringing sun protection, a hat, sunglasses, drinking water, suitable clothing and any personal medication you may need. If you're bringing a camera, make sure it's protected against water and sea spray.
We'll share any additional recommendations before your trip.
Photography & Equipment
Do I need an expensive camera to join an expedition?
No. You can join with whatever camera you have, whether that's a professional underwater setup, an action camera or simply your phone for moments on the surface. The equipment you need depends on the expedition and the kind of images you want to make.
Are your expeditions only for underwater photographers?
Not necessarily. Our expeditions are designed for people who are curious about the ocean and wildlife, with a particular focus on underwater photography. You don't need to be a professional photographer, and some trips are suitable for people who simply want to experience these environments.
Check the individual expedition page to see whether it fits your interests and experience.
Will I get photographs of myself with wildlife?
We understand that these moments can mean a lot. However, our priority is spending time observing and documenting the wildlife, and we cannot guarantee photographs of participants with animals. Opportunities depend on wildlife behaviour, conditions and the way each encounter unfolds.
If having photographs of yourself is important to you, let us know before the trip so we can discuss what's realistic.
Can I rent photography equipment?
Equipment availability depends on the destination and expedition. Contact us before booking if you need to rent a camera, housing or other equipment, so we can discuss the available options.
Expeditions & Booking
How do I book an expedition?
Some expeditions use an application process. Submit the application form on the relevant expedition page and we'll review it. If we feel it's a good fit, we'll email you the next steps and a booking link.
Where a 12-hour booking hold is offered, your place is held for that period while you complete the required payment. Your booking is confirmed once the payment requirements have been met.
Why do you ask people to apply before booking?
We keep our expeditions small on purpose. The people you share these days with matter, and we want to make sure the trip is a good fit for everyone involved. The application also gives you a chance to tell us about your interests, experience and expectations before committing.
How many people join an expedition?
Group sizes depend on the trip. We keep our expeditions small to create a more personal experience and allow us to adapt to the group and the conditions. Check the individual expedition page for the maximum group size.
What's included in the price?
Inclusions vary between trips. Each expedition page explains what's included, what's not included and any additional expenses you should plan for. We recommend reading these details before applying or booking.
What happens after I book?
We'll share the relevant information to help you prepare, including practical details, meeting arrangements, equipment recommendations and any additional requirements for your expedition.
If you have questions before departure, you can contact us directly.
Can I cancel or change my booking?
Cancellation, refund and transfer conditions depend on the specific trip and are outlined in our Terms & Conditions and booking information. Please read these carefully before paying your deposit.
Do I need travel insurance?
We strongly recommend travel insurance appropriate to your trip and activities. For multi-day expeditions, check that your policy covers medical expenses, emergency evacuation and trip cancellation or interruption, as relevant.
Responsible Wildlife Encounters
How do you approach wildlife photography?
We believe the best picture is the one that puts animal welfare first. We aim to observe wildlife without forcing interactions, disturbing natural behaviour or putting the animals under unnecessary pressure.
Wildlife encounters are never entirely under our control, and we may change our approach whenever necessary to respect the animals, the conditions or local regulations.
Will we always get in the water?
No. Water entry depends on the destination, local regulations, safety considerations, wildlife behaviour and ocean conditions. Some encounters are best experienced from the boat, and sometimes the right decision is not to enter the water at all.
What happens if we don't find the wildlife we're looking for?
We keep looking when conditions allow, but nature doesn't follow a schedule. We cannot guarantee any particular species or encounter, and the absence of a sighting does not automatically entitle participants to a refund. Please refer to the relevant booking terms for the conditions that apply to your trip.
I have another question. How can I contact you?
We'd be happy to help. If you're unsure whether an expedition is right for you, have questions about equipment or want to discuss your expectations before booking, get in touch through our contact page.
